A little preparation before your henna appointment can make a huge difference in the quality and longevity of your stain. Whether it's your first time or your twentieth, following these tips will help you get the most beautiful results possible.
1–2 Days Before Your Appointment
Exfoliate the Area
Gently exfoliate the skin where you'll be getting henna. Use a mild scrub or exfoliating glove in the shower. This removes dead skin cells from the surface, allowing the henna dye to penetrate fresh skin and produce a deeper, longer-lasting stain.
Remove Unwanted Hair
If you plan to wax or shave the area where you'll be getting henna, do it at least 24–48 hours before your appointment. Waxing or shaving right before can leave the skin irritated, and the open pores may cause the henna to stain unevenly.
Skip Self-Tanner
Self-tanning products create an artificial layer on top of the skin that prevents henna from penetrating properly. Avoid applying self-tanner to the henna area for at least a week before your appointment.
The Day of Your Appointment
Keep Skin Clean & Dry
On the day of, wash the area with plain soap and water, then dry thoroughly. The goal is to present clean, natural skin to the henna paste.
Avoid Lotions, Oils & Creams
This is the most important preparation tip. Lotions, moisturizers, sunscreen, and oils create a barrier between the henna paste and your skin. Even if you applied lotion that morning, it can reduce stain quality. Make sure the area is completely product-free.
Eat Before You Come
Depending on the complexity of your design, you may need to sit still for 15 minutes to several hours (for bridal henna). Having a meal beforehand ensures you're comfortable and relaxed throughout the session.
Dress Appropriately
- For hand/arm henna: Wear short sleeves or a sleeveless top so fabric won't smudge the design
- For foot/ankle henna: Wear open-toed sandals or flip-flops
- General tip: Wear loose, dark clothing that won't be ruined if a bit of henna paste accidentally touches it
Bring Design Inspiration
If you have a specific look in mind, save images on your phone or bring printouts. Pinterest boards, Instagram screenshots, or even rough sketches are all helpful. If you're unsure, don't worry — I have an extensive portfolio and can suggest designs based on your preferences and the occasion.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
- Your phone charger — you may be sitting for a while
- Entertainment — a book, podcasts, or a friend to chat with
- A companion — especially for bridal henna, someone who can help you eat, drink, and handle your phone
- A ride home — if getting hand henna, driving with fresh paste can be tricky
Special Situations
Wedding or Event Henna
Schedule your bridal henna 1–2 days before the wedding for peak color. For more details, read our Complete Bridal Henna Guide.
Getting Henna While Pregnant
Natural henna is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but I always recommend discussing it with your doctor first. Read our Henna During Pregnancy Guide for full details.
Sensitive Skin or Allergies
If you have sensitive skin, let me know before the appointment. I use only 100% natural henna with no chemical additives. However, some people can be sensitive to essential oils used in the paste. A patch test can be arranged — see our Henna Allergies & Patch Test Guide.
